Commercial fishing in the Hauraki Gulf, the debate continues

Last week we asked you if you would support the compulsory recording of recreational catches if it would reduce commercial fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. We had a huge response with the public seemingly split over the issue.

The poll was divided.

There were passionate arguments made from both sides. Here is a few examples of the dichotomy of comments on the issue;  starting with those in support of the proposal.

Then taking the opposite point of view:

A commonly held sentiment among those on the 'No" side was that any ceasing of commercial fishing in the Hauraki Gulf would put further pressure on the surrounding fisheries.

Echoing this in an interview with the NZ Herald, Sanford CEO Volker Kuntzsch admits that were they to stop fishing in the Hauraki Gulf they would still fill their quota further out and in different New Zealand Fishing zones.

This is a really complex issue and will not be resolved anytime soon. However we at NZ Fishing World firmly believe that any debate is a good debate. Please comment below or comment or message us on Facebook to voice your opinion on the issue.
