Covid lockdown shackles are off again for now, and we are finally able to get out for a fish! Things are pretty busy getting ready for the season and all, and the weather has been crazy with some amazing days and some not so amazing.

All this resulting on limited time on the water, but from what we see the fishing is naturally pretty good as you would expect at this time of year.

On the snapper side, large schools of anchovies in the middle ground have started to attract some good-sized school snapper, with several going over that magic 20 pound mark that so many people have yet to crack.

There are plenty of gannets reporting to boaties exactly where the action with the bait so it does make it a little easier to find the fish.

As per most previous years, Mitas Foul and along that southern side of the bay has large groups of fish mid water so softbaiting is the go.

It’s a great way to catch big fish that are lots of fun and a good scrap on light gear.

The kingfish are around but have been a little scarce in the bait schools, so a bit of bait school hopping is sometimes needed to find which bait balls are actually holding them.

Out on the deeper reefs the fish have been holding on the north west corner of the 71 metre reef, and on the southern side of the dog.

We are all looking forward to the guys in Auckland being able to stretch out a bit more soon and join us up here for some real Bay of Islands action 😊

Cheers Darren
