As predicted we have had a really good autumn period on the great lake, not so much numbers wise but fish in stunning condition and size.

Jigging has been the main method still but the trollers have certainly done a lot better as the water has cooled down significantly. Many of the fish are now carrying eggs and are in prime condition ready to run. The key depth has now come back to between 30-40 meters.

Harlers are also enjoying some early morning sport with areas of 5 mile bay particularly around the Waitahanui going really well.

There is probably another month of good sport to be had on the lake for those prepared to stay on the move and chop and change according to the conditions. Expect some outstanding quality fish.

Local fly fishing has started quite early this year with good numbers entering the system after the last rain about 4 or 5 weeks ago.

The rivers are now very low and clear as we write this report and fish in the system are now very wary but can be caught by a cautious approach, longer leaders, and smaller natural flies. Some outstanding sized and conditioned fish have already been caught already.

A small indicator or Czech style nymphing has been the go over the last few weeks.

Don’t put the dry flies away quite yet though as we have been having some lively little mayfly hatches on the warmer afternoons on most of the local rivers.

What we need now is prolonged amount of dirty wet weather to get the next runs into the system and we should be all go with what I still predict will be one of the best seasons for many years.

Tight lines to all
