For the top line, here’s the details from Grant out there this week, with a great looking weekend coming up, especially Saturday.
The western side of the gulf just exploded this week, with full on workups.
Basically, from Tiri all the way past Whangaparaoa Bay to Kawau was chocka with pilchard workups, mostly being driven by kahawai rather than mammals.
There are some epic kingfish around these workups, especially Whangaparaoa Bay and Flat Rock, with specimens over 20kgs chasing the hooked kahawai to the surface, so if you want to chase a big kingy, get your jig gear and topwater outfits ready, and certainly throw a live kahawai out into the mix and hang on.
North of Flat Rock workups and good snapper, extending all the way to north Omaha, miles of action and great fishing under it would be pretty likely, but not guaranteed.
Bite times have been bang on, and there were distinct off-bite times despite all the activity.
Closer to Auckland the Firth is still well worth prospecting, still workups and nesting gannets that want to spend as little time away from the nest will show you where there is any likely fishing.
There are some really banger snapper out there, so fishing the gulf this week should be mint.
Let’s remember it is breeding/spawning season now for snapper, so they are easy to catch for a few months. For this reason just take what you need and maybe return the big fish for the sake of the environment-go-round etc 😊
Cheers,
Captain Espresso.
