This Wellington / Kaipiti reports a promising fishing scene with bluefin tuna, snapper, sizeable gurnard, and schools of kahawai, alongside notable kingfish sightings near Kapiti Island, setting the stage for an exciting weekend ahead.

Good afternoon from the lower North Island.

It's been an intriguing few weeks, with bluefin tuna spotted off Days Bay Wharf and snapper appearing.

(Update from the Editor: We've now been sent the video by angler Fletcher Tornquist. You can view it here: Bluefin tuna hooked from Wellington wharf 😃)

This weekend promises excellent conditions out west.

Snapper are showing up in significant numbers north of Kapiti Island and are gradually moving down the coast, with a few also in Wellington Harbour.

There's an abundance of sizeable gurnard being caught across the region. Enormous schools of kahawai are gathering as the whitebait and krill migrate.

Notably, some fine kingfish have been sighted around Kapiti Island and the Hunters and Boom Rock reefs. The fishing has been superb, and we're eagerly anticipating the weekend.

Tight lines.
