There are still plenty of good winter snapper being caught, we have had most of our good fishing and reports from up Kapiti way recently. The weather, particularly from the south, has put the usual fisherman-limiter on us.

It is pretty typical to expect some rough stuff in July, but there are plenty of short windows, usually mid-week to be had if you can grab them.

Our recent run to top up the local store’s bait supplies showed us how few anglers had been out!

We have seen lots of snapper coming from Kapiti, including some big ones, taking both jigs and baits.

Usually in winter, a good berley trail is often the thing that makes all the difference, but that is by no means a rule, and drifting with kabura and Inchiku style jigs can really pull some great fish particularly in the deeper reaches 50 metres plus.

Kapiti fishes pretty well off all its coasts, and it’s really just a matter of finding the best side as suits the weather and tidal conditions at the time.

There’s always a good chance of big snapper after a solid blow, so heading out to Kapiti is a good option to try for them, or pick up a decent feed of cod and terakihi at least.

There’s a few puka around too if you are out a bit deeper.

Hopefully we get a bit of action over the next couple of weeks to report if the weather lets up a bit.

Cheers

Pete
