Bay of Islands
fishing report
September 3, 2020
Hi guys, the last week has been a bit hit and miss with some nice fish caught but a lot dropped. The shallows have been the go to for me, with a bit of berley. I prefer to cube rather than using a fine burly trail, trying to keep the smell and food close to the boat so we don't attract too many sharks. This often works well but you have to be conscious to keep a steady trail going, rather than just leaving a bomb or a chum bucket to do its thing with the natural water wash.
There are some big schools of mackerel out there, both blue and jacks, with some nice sized pilchards mixed in as well.
Naturally this means the kingfish are in the same area, but they are often accompanied by some nice sized bronze whalers, so if you get a kingy in count your lucky stars.
Let’s hope the sharks are not here in big numbers in the upcoming season!
In the middle ground, the fish are there but a lot of small fish have been a huge problem stripping baits very quicky, so moving to a bigger bait can be a better option.
Out wide, the puka are starting to move in now.
Most of the inner reefs past the Cape have fish on them, and with Spring finally here the fishing will start to fire soon, usually with a few scouts moving into the bay following big bait schools.
Can’t wait to get out there, be safe tight lines
Cheers
Darren
