Around about now many of you will be thinking about a trip over to Waihau Bay to chase the southern bluefin tuna annual run. This year has seen some big barrels landed already, with fish up to 100 plus kilos making it on board.

The weather has been so ordinary we have not been out much lately, but our last mission out to the Mayor Knolls chasing deep water species turned out pretty good.

Electric reels are the order of the day for many folks, but watch you don’t winch the swivel through the tip guide like one of our (shall remain nameless) customers did!

We had most success with targeting bluenose in around 250 to 300 metres, so it’s a long day on the reel if you are needing to move around a lot.

We managed eight bluenose between four anglers, the biggest a reasonably modest 8 to 14 kilos, but great size for eating, and the usual solid helping of good sized gemfish rounded out the haul.

We tried the reasonably popular 290 knoll, but couldn’t really see any decent sign or get onto fish.

However, the outer penguin rise was fishing well.  From the penguin shoals straight out probably another 8 or 9 miles.

It took a couple of drift sets to get the line right and we got a couple of good bites each pass once that was sorted, with fish holding up to 10 metres off the bottom.

The terakihi fishing has also been good for us, between Motiti and Schooner turning up nice fish in great winter condition

Good luck out there

Cheers

Russ
