Fishing in the Taupo district continues to amaze everyone this year, it has got to be one of the best seasons recorded for many years!! Moving into July now and the fishing continues to fire on all of the rivers and they all seem to have had an increase in size and numbers.

Obviously the fishing improves massively after a good fresh but with so many fish now in the system there must be hundreds of reds getting dug up by new fish entering the system which in turn puts up thousands of already laid eggs which are eagerly devoured by the trout.

With the lake level being low the river levels are tending to recede quite quickly but unlike other years the trout are continuing to run albeit in smaller numbers but can be found with a bit of exploring in the low and clear conditions.

During these conditions even more fish are starting to gather at many river mouths waiting for the next rain.

So even if the rivers are low a good alternative can be some river mouth fishing either swinging streamers in the current or hard on the bottom with a booby fly or heave and leave.

There is plenty of winter left to enjoy and hopefully this awesome fishing should carry through until mid-late August.

Some great news regarding changes to Lake Otamangakau this coming season.

A full list of these changes to help “future proof” this iconic world class fishery can be found on the DOC website. I would like to take the opportunity to thank DOC for being so proactive on this matter and a big thanks to all our customers and interested parties that took the time to come in and sign the petition that I put together over 2 years ago now.

Well done to all those involved.

The great lake continues to fish well!!

Even through the depths of winter we are still having some great fishing with some outstanding quality fish coming to the boat.

Trolling and harling have been top methods as you would expect at this time of the year as both methods cover a lot of water.

As ever in winter it is very much a hunting game and staying on the move until you find the location and depth to fish is the key to successful winter fishing on Lake Taupo.

A timely reminder that new licences for the Taupo region are required from 1st July. You can buy online or from your local retailer.

We look forward to seeing you through the shop.

Cheers
