Kawhia / Raglan
fishing report
October 23, 2020
Go the wild west coast! We have been getting some very good snapper up to 20lb 8-10lb being pretty common and really good eaters seem to fill the rest of the gaps. Limits are pretty easily achieved most days, and in very short time generally.
The late morning is usually good, but it’s not a given, and some days you still have to go and have a look around as the fishing patterns changew from day to day.
one day they can be in around the 40 meters and the next 50-60 meters so they are not settled yet.
At present there are lots of dolphins and birds if you happen to be in the right spot and they are yielding some off the dial fishing.
Not much in the way of by-catch few gurnard and kahawai and barracouta can be pretty plentiful.
If the fish are not biting on one tide they will start on the next so it can pay to wait around, but I guess you have to use your gut feel and think about how the tides will effect your bar crossing for heading home.
We have mostly been fishing off the bar leads or slightly south, but I’m sure fish are holding in wider areas at the moment.
Take care out there this weekend, the weather is looking good, a bit of swell for some of the smaller boats may have to wait for the tide change.
Cheers
Rob
