Last week we talked about the effect of the moon. Well over the past few days, with the moon in the ‘upward facing cup’ position, it has treated us very well with some outstanding fishing, including consistent snapper catches of fish up to fifteen pounds.

The favourite baits are our usual go-to of fresh kahawai and barracouta.  Nice medium size strips hooked once or twice at most over a recurve are the best style.

If you can’t get fresh baits, bonito still produces the goods also, and you can also fish lures at anchor sometimes with great results.

We also had a great berley and stray-line session on Aotea Reef last week.

No twenty pounders, but the biggest fish going 75 cm was a nice specimen by any standard.

To my surprise, no sharks.  This certainly makes a nice change.

If you want a great day, head out to 40-50 metres off Aotea Reef.  Recently there’s been plenty of surface action, with kahawai working bait, and the snaps under them waiting eagerly for scraps.

Very little in the way of bycatch this week, when the snapper are feeding so aggressively they tend to dominate.

Weather for the weekend is looking good with a bit of swell to 1.5 metres, not much wind, and low tide is around 07.30, so if the bar is looking a bit angry, give it a bit of time and it will come right.

Be safe enjoy the weekend

Cheers

Rob
