The days are getting shorter and cooler but the snapper are getting bigger and biting hotter. Yes, we are having some pretty good fishing at present and snapper in the mid-teens are been caught most days. We are finding the 30-40 metre zone now is the magic mark, particularly south of Taharoa.

Some days they can take 20 odd minutes to get on the bite then it can be a steady stream of fish or they just go nuts and limits done in a few hours.

The key to finding them seems to be looking for birds the little petrels if they are resting on the water this is a sign of action in the last hour or so.

This means the snapper and other fish are down there munching on all the bits left behind. I find active birds will only have kahawai there no scrapes at the bottom yet so mostly just kahawai here.

There are in spots lots of little snapper so move along.

Still plenty of bycatch gurnard kahawai trevally and kingfish. Fresh mackerel are doing the damage and around the birds these guys are regular bycatch, so slice them up and down they go.

If you are keen to come out with us and brave a small gathering, we are pretty much booked until the end of March so make a booking sooner rather than later to catch the action.
